BMW Z4 GT3 scores triple podium in Portugal – Next up: the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

Munich, 9th May 2011. BMW private teams kicked off the FIA GT3 European Championship in style last weekend. Need for Speed Team Schubert claimed a one-two with the BMW Z4 GT3 at the first race of the year in Portimão (PT). Edward Sandström (SE) and Abdulaziz Turki Al Faisal (SA) crossed the line first, followed by team-mates Claudia Hürtgen (DE) and Csaba Walter (HU).

The final spot on the podium also went to a BMW pairing: Hoevert Vos (NL) and Jeroen den Boer (NL) – also driving a BMW Z4 GT3 for the Faster Racing by DB Motorsport team – finished third. In the second race on Sunday, Walter and Hürtgen were the highest-placed BMW drivers in fifth.

“Congratulations to all the BMW drivers, who demonstrated so impressively in the very first race of the FIA GT3 European Championship how competitive the modified BMW Z4 GT3 is,” says BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. “Over the winter our team went through the car with a fine-tooth comb and made many detailed improvements. The curtain-raiser to the season in Portugal proved that this work was efficient. I am certain that the BMW Z4 GT3 will continue to be a successful ambassador for the BMW Customer Racing programme over the remainder of the season.”

Following the perfect start in Portimão, the BMW Z4 GT3 will face the opposition once again this weekend, when it will join an already strong contingent of BMW cars competing in the third round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (DE). BMW Motorsport will once again line up with two BMW M3 GT cars in the “Green Hell”. Augusto Farfus (BR), Jörg Müller (DE) and Pedro Lamy (PT) will alternate behind the wheel of car number 42 at the 42nd Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy. The BMW M3 GT number 43 will be driven by Andy Priaulx (GB), Dirk Müller (DE) and Dirk Adorf (DE).

No less than 80 BMW cars, including the Dörr Motorsport team's BMW Z4 GT3, had registered for the second VLN race at the legendary Nordschleife, which took place at the end of April. In total, ten class victories went to BMW drivers. Alongside Dörr Motorsport, Need for Speed Team Schubert will also line up with three BMW Z4 GT3 cars in round three on Saturday.
