BMW Motorsport Press Release 06.06.2011

Munich, 6th June 2011. While Team BMW Motorsport is in the middle of intensive preparations for the classic 24 Hours of Le Mans (FR), BMW privateers last weekend claimed various triumphs and top podium places in numerous championships.

The BMW Z4 GT3 continued its success story in the FIA GT3 European Championship, with another BMW team securing a one-two in the second race weekend of the series: The Dutch team of Faster Racing DB Motorsport came first and second in the fourth round held at the Silverstone Circuit. Hoevert Vos (NL) and Jeroen den Boer (NL) secured victory ahead of team-mates Harrie Kolen (NL) and Nicky Catsburg (NL). Saturday’s race saw Edward Sandström (SE) and Abdulaziz Al Faisal (SA) of Need for Speed Team Schubert finish as best BMW representatives in fourth place. After four rounds BMW retains top positions in both the drivers’ and teams’ classifications.

For the debut of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Budapest (HU), BMW privateers had reason to celebrate in front of 60,000 fans on Sunday. The first race saw local hero Norbert Michelisz (HU) take second place and the Independents’ Trophy in the BMW 320 TC entered by the Zengö Dension Team, with Proteam’s Javier Villa (ES) taking his first career WTCC podium with third. In race 2 Tom Coronel (NL, ROAL Motorsport) was the most successful BMW driver in fourth, while Franz Engstler (DE) of Liqui Moly Team Engstler took the Independents’ Trophy with his sixth place.

The Italian Superstars Series visited Misano (IT) – delivering yet further podium places for BMW drivers. Team BMW Italia driver Alberto Cerqui (IT) was third in the first race at the wheel of a BMW M3. His team-mate Thomas Biagi (IT) took second in the second race to retain his championship lead, while Cristian Montanari (IT, RGA Sportmanship) came home third. The British Touring Car Championship round in Oulton Park (GB), too, saw success for a BMW driver when Robert Collard (GB) took the traditional champagne shower after racing to second place in his BMW 320si.

In the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series round in Watkins Glen (US), Scott Pruett (US) and Memo Rojas (MX) took their BMW Riley to second, recording yet another BMW podium place, while the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event at the same venue saw Mark Boden (US) and Terry Borcheller (US) finish third in a BMW M3.

Ricardo van der Ende (NL) and Duncan Huisman (NL) experienced a virtually perfect weekend in the GT4 European Cup: In Silverstone the duo drove their BMW M3 GT4 to second place in the first race before crossing the line first in both the second and third races.
