Five generations within 30 years.

Five generations within 30 years.
The birth of a high-performance icon.
24.05.2016

When it developed a high-performance sports car based on the BMW 3 Series, BMW was really just trying to find a way into the DTM. The successes of this fascinating cross-breeding of sedan and motor sport genes were, however, overwhelming on numerous levels.

Right in the very first season, the BMW M3 dominated the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (German Touring Car Championship), including overall championship victory. And the sales figures of the first-generation BMW M3 with its 200 HP four-cylinder also exceeded all expectations. BMW recognised the potential. From this point on each additional generation reinforced the BMW legend:

In the second generation which launched in 1992, the raised rear spoiler and its broad nose enhanced the significantly more discrete appearance of the BMW M3 based on the E36. With 286 HP from an inline six-cylinder, it was no less powerful, but its appearance made it more of a wolf in sheep's clothing than a muscleman.

The third-generation BMW M3 was based on the E36 and went even further to conceal its power reserves. And rightly so, as with its high-rev engine it blasted the 300 HP record by 43 HP.

Derived from the V10 of the BMW M5 (E60) from 2007, in the fourth generation a V8 with four-litre cylinder capacity and an impressive 420 HP then admirably performed its duty in a BMW M3. It rapidly achieved cult status with its high-rev character, sharp throttle response and goosebumps-inducing sound in a top quality athletic body.

The fifth BMW M3 generation has continued the tradition of high performance sports cars since 2014, and represents the high point to date in dynamics and power. This is thanks in particular to its M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder with up to 450 HP. Powerdome and expansive air inlets on the outside also unmistakably pay testament to its claim to the top.

In 30 years of BMW M3, each of the five BMW M3 generations has embodied the very best in technical ability. With the goal of overriding the laws of physics vis-a-vis dynamics and agility. Redefining boundaries. Raising standards for high-performance cars. Goals that have made the BMW M3 what it is today: an icon of automotive engineering and synonym for "high-performance sports car".
