The M52TU is a sort of hybrid belt and braces arrangement.
The Throttle position sensors are on the throttle body and moved by the cable. There are 4 of these potentiometers on the cable end of the butterfly shaft where the cable connects.
The throttle is motor driven but if this system fails the cable can open and close the throttle against tensioning springs which are part of the motor driven butterfly assembly.
The later M54 engines are true fly by wire as these have the throttle position sensor in a module at the pedal and no throttle cable.
