DTM 2014

Street race.
The Chinese leg of the 2014 DTM season will be held on a street circuit. It was announced today that the ninth round of the touring car series will take place in Guangzhou from 26th to 28th September.

With ten million inhabitants, Guangzhou is the third largest city in China. The metropolis is located on the estuary of the Pearl River, in the province of Guangdong, which is bordered by the South China Sea, Hong Kong and Macau to the southeast.

Sections of the racetrack, which is being designed and built specifically for the DTM, will take the BMW drivers along the banks of the river. Subject to final approval from the national and international motorsport federations, the planned circuit will be 4.1 kilometres long and feature four right-hand corners, two left-handers and a combination of fast and slow sections.

China will be hosting its third DTM race. In 2004, the touring car series held an invitational race in the metropolis of Shanghai. Six years later, Shanghai was once again the venue for the final race in the 2010 DTM season.

Jerez de la Frontera (ES), 5th December 2013. BMW Motorsport has successfully completed the final DTM test of the year. The BMW drivers covered over 5,000 kilometres at the “Circuito de Velocidad” in Jerez de la Frontera (ES), southern Spain.
Augusto Farfus (BR), Bruno Spengler (CA), Timo Glock (DE), Joey Hand (US), Martin Tomczyk (DE) and Maxime Martin (BE) were in action from Sunday to Thursday in the BMW M3 DTM. BMW driver Jens Klingmann, whose outings this year included the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE) with BMW Team Schubert, made his debut at the wheel of a DTM car. Red Bull Junior, António Félix da Costa (PT), also enjoyed his first outing in the BMW M3 DTM.
The programme featured numerous functions, systems and chassis tests, as well as long runs on prime and option tyres. The engineers were also able to test several set-up variants, which they were unable to run during the 2013 season due to the limited practice time on race weekends.
Timo Glock (BMW works driver):
“After the season finale in Hockenheim and my first DTM win, it was a great feeling to get back in the car for the test. We had fantastic weather in Jerez and got through a lot of laps. I drove over 700 kilometres on Tuesday alone. We were able to try a lot of things out and make some valuable findings.”
António Félix da Costa:
“That was a very good experience. The standard in the DTM is incredibly high, and BMW Motorsport is extremely professional. That much was clear from the word go. The BMW M3 DTM is great fun – and is much quicker than I expected. It generates an awful lot of downforce for a car with a roof. That surprised me. We made progress with every stint, and I felt more and more at home. The conditions were perfect for getting to know a new car for the first time. The team made me feel very welcome and the engineers supported me really well. All in all, it was a really productive test.”
Jens Klingmann:
“I was obviously absolutely delighted to be given the chance to drive a DTM car. It required quite a big adjustment from the BMW Z4 GT3 to the BMW M3 DTM at first. However, you progress with every lap, so you improve step by step. The biggest difference was the carbon brakes. I had never driven with anything like that before. Therefore, I had to guess the braking points a bit at first. That aspect improved all the time, until I was actually very happy by the end of the day. After a time, you are then able to drive the car consistently and at a certain level. I have often been present at DTM races for BMW and am sure that made the test easier, as I already knew everyone in the team. To then climb in behind the wheel myself was a great experience.”

Martin and Félix da Costa line up in the DTM.
With one day to go before the traditional season review in BMW Welt in Munich, BMW Motorsport has already set the direction it will be going in for the coming season.

In the DTM, two new drivers are being given the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new BMW M4 DTM. Maxime Martin is promoted from test and development driver to a regular seat, while BMW Motorsport will also send António Félix da Costa into action as one of its eight DTM drivers.
“After his impressive year as test and development driver, Maxime Martin is now ready to prove himself in the DTM. He showed in the DTM tests and his successful outings in the BMW Z4 GT3 that he will be a valuable addition to our driver line-up,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “António Félix da Costa really convinced us what a talented driver he is during his tests in the BMW M3 DTM, and through his previous success in single-seater racing. I am looking forward to following his development in the DTM.”
Twenty seven-year-old Martin has been particularly successful with the Marc VDS Racing team from Belgium. In 2012 and 2013 he finished runner-up and third overall in the Blancpain Endurance Series. Last season he was instrumental in BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS claiming second place at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. In 2013 Martin also raced for BMW Team RLL in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), claiming GT victory in Long Beach alongside Bill Auberlen. “It was always my goal to use my year as test and development driver to put forward my case for a DTM seat,” said Martin. “I am very proud to have achieved that goal. Thank you very much to BMW Motorsport for the very informative past year and for their faith in me. I will do my very best to be successful in the DTM.”
Twenty two-year-old Félix da Costa arrives in the DTM with a wealth of experience in single-seater racing. Having raced in the Formula 3 Euro Series and GP3 Championship, the Portuguese driver joined the Red Bull Junior team in 2012. He crowned his 2012 season by winning the legendary Formula 3 race in Macau. In 2013 Félix da Costa finished third overall in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series and took part in Formula One testing. “It is an honour for me to drive for such a big manufacturer as BMW,” he said. “Switching from single-seater racing to touring cars is a new experience, but the cars are great to drive. The DTM is a top-class racing series – and I can’t wait to get stuck into this challenge.”
Andy Priaulx and Dirk Werner will no longer line up in the DTM in 2014, but remain as works drivers and members of the BMW family. Priaulx is switching to BMW Team RLL and will race in the new United SportsCar Championship (USCC) in North America. Werner will be the spearhead of the BMW Motorsport endurance programme, which will see him in action in the BMW Z4 GT3 at events including the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
“BMW Motorsport is involved in numerous racing projects, and the boundaries between these projects are not set in stone,” said Marquardt. “Moving Andy Priaulx and Dirk Werner allows us to further upgrade our commitments in North America and on the endurance circuit. Both drivers will be valuable members of their new teams, thanks to their wealth of experience.”
“I had two great years with BMW Team Schnitzer and will always have fond memories of this time,” said Werner. “I am obviously disappointed to no longer be driving in the DTM. However, it is nice to remain part of the BMW family. I felt right at home on the endurance circuit prior to my time in the DTM. I am looking forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces again.”
Priaulx added: “The DTM was a fantastic experience for me. I had some great moments – and went out in style with my third place on the grid at the season finale in Hockenheim. However, I did miss standing on the podium. That is something I am now determined to achieve on a regular basis again with BMW Team RLL in the USCC. I still know the guys from my victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2011 and am looking forward to this new and exciting challenge.”

BMW reveals driver/team line-up for 2014 season.
Exactly 111 days before the first race of the year in Hockenheim, BMW Motorsport has announced the driver/team line-up for the 2014 DTM season.

Like last year, four teams and eight drivers will compete for BMW in the popular touring car series and have their sights set on winning races and titles with the new BMW M4 DTM.
“In announcing exactly which drivers will be racing for which teams, we are taking another important step towards the start of the 2014 DTM season,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “I am confident this line-up is the ideal solution for BMW Motorsport and our DTM project.”
BMW Team RBM, which finished runner-up in last season’s team competition with 148 points and therefore played a major role in BMW retaining the Manufacturers’ title, will compete with the same pair of drivers as last year: Augusto Farfus, runner-up in the 2013 Drivers’ Championship, and Joey Hand will be racing for Team Principal Bart Mampaey’s outfit again in 2014.
Changes are afoot in the remaining three works teams. The two former DTM champions in the BMW Motorsport squad will pair up as team-mates. Martin Tomczyk, the 2011 winner, switches to BMW Team Schnitzer. He will join Bruno Spengler, who won the Drivers’ title for BMW in 2012 and will contest his third season for Charly Lamm’s team.
Timo Glock, winner of the final race of the 2013 DTM season, will be back behind the wheel for BMW Team MTEK. The man who made 91 appearances in Formula One will be joined by a new team-mate: António Félix da Costa’s first DTM season will be under the guidance of Team Principal Ernest Knoors. Marco Wittmann, DTM Rookie of the Year in 2013, switches to BMW Team RMG where he forms an extremely promising partnership with DTM newcomer Maxime Martin.
Marquardt added: “I think we have another very impressive looking line-up again in 2014. As far as the fans are concerned, I believe there is something there to suit everyone’s taste. BMW Team RMG undoubtedly failed to fulfil its potential last year. We are sure that Stefan Reinhold’s team will come back from the break reinvigorated and ready to get back to successful ways with Marco Wittmann and Maxime Martin. After a really successful first year in the DTM, Marco is definitely ready to take the next step. Augusto Farfus, Joey Hand and BMW Team RBM worked perfectly together in 2013. BMW Team MTEK and Timo Glock are extremely motivated for their second year in the DTM following the victory in Hockenheim – and they are very happy to welcome promising youngster António Félix da Costa on board. The combination of our two DTM champions, Bruno Spengler and Martin Tomczyk, with Charly Lamm’s team promises to be very successful. Like everyone else in the team, I cannot wait for the first race. We have an intense programme of preparations with the BMW M4 DTM to complete before then.”
The 2014 DTM season begins at the Hockenheimring on 4th May. In keeping with tradition, the same circuit will host the final race of the year on 19th October. Between these two dates, the calendar features a further four races in Germany (Oschersleben, Norisring, Nürburgring, Lausitzring) and four races abroad (Budapest, Moscow, Spielberg, Guangzhou).

Red Bull is partner of BMW Motorsport.
BMW Motorsport goes into the coming DTM season with a new partner on board. When the new BMW M4 DTM driven by António Félix da Costa appears on the starting grid for the opening race in Hockenheim on 4th May, it will do so in a Red Bull livery.

Félix da Costa has been part of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2012 and will race alongside Timo Glock for BMW Team MTEK in the DTM.
“It is not only the fact that Red Bull has won four Formula One World Championships in a row that make it such a big name in motorsport, and thus a very attractive Premium Partner for us,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Like Red Bull, we have the opportunity to ensure that António continues to develop quickly and to make him an even better racing driver. I think we will all have a lot of fun following his development in the DTM. We are really looking forward to working closely with Red Bull.”
Twenty two-year-old Félix da Costa arrives in the DTM with a wealth of experience gained in single-seater racing. He progressed to the Red Bull Junior programme in 2012 via the Formula 3 Euro Series and GP3 Championship. In 2013 he finished third overall in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series and completed a number of Formula One tests for Red Bull Racing.
“I am very pleased to keep the Red Bull colours for this year, and am delighted to be able to count on its continued support in the DTM,” said Félix da Costa. “Red Bull has enjoyed the greatest possible success in motorsport in recent years and I really feel part of this family. Representing BMW Motorsport and Red Bull is something special, and I could not wish for a better combination.”

BMW M4 DTM: preparations on the finishing straight.
The submission of the necessary papers for the aerodynamic homologation of the 2014-spec DTM cars to the Deutsche Motor Sport Bund (DMSB) also marks the end of a busy, and yet exciting, period for BMW Motorsport.

Development work on the BMW M4 DTM, which will compete in the forthcoming DTM season, has been in full swing in recent weeks and months. As of today, it is no longer possible to make modifications to fundamental areas of the car, heralding a new phase of preparations for the start of the season in Hockenheim on 4th May. The forthcoming tests will primarily focus on optimising detailed aspects of the total package and understanding how to exhaust the full potential of the BMW M4 DTM.
The new car will make public appearances out on the track at the official ITR tests in Budapest (31st March – 3rd April) and then at the final test in Hockenheim (14th – 17th April). Like last year, the official presentation of all eight BMW M4 DTMs on 25th April in Munich’s BMW Welt will provide BMW Motorsport fans with a mouth-watering taste of what they can look forward to in the new season.
“Even before the BMW M3 DTM completed its final race last season, our development team was already hard at work on the 2014 car,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Preparing a new car for the DTM is a big challenge. In few other series is aerodynamics so important. Even the slightest detail can make the difference between success and failure. And this attention to detail shown by our engineers is apparent at first glance – from the elongated bonnet with its steeply sloping front and aerodynamically optimised wing mirrors, to the contoured roofline that is a characteristic feature of the BMW M4.”
Marquardt added: “For me, the BMW M4 DTM is an absolute highlight. Like its production counterpart, it looks fantastic and it also made a positive first impression at our tests. Unlike when we were developing the BMW M3 DTM for our return to the DTM in 2012, this time around we were able to call upon the wealth of experience gained over the last two seasons. Despite this, we still have a long road ahead of us – the opposition have continued to develop their cars in the meantime. It is important to continue gradually improving the new car and ensure we can get the very best out of it, in order to be able to compete on a par with our strong and experienced rivals right from the outset with the BMW M4 DTM. I am confident we will achieve this. Every DTM fan can already look forward to the first showdown in Hockenheim on 4th May: only then will we know exactly how competitive the BMW M4 DTM really is.”

The new challenger makes its debut: Preparations for the start of the BMW M4 DTM’s first season enter the finishing straight.

Munich (DE), 1st March 2014. Like last year, the official presentation of all eight BMW M4 DTMs on 25th April in Munich’s BMW Welt will provide BMW Motorsport fans with a mouth-watering taste of what they can look forward to in the new season.

I am confident we will achieve this. Every DTM fan can already look forward to the first showdown in Hockenheim on 4th May: only then will we know exactly how competitive the BMW M4 DTM really is.”
Presenting the BMW M4 DTM for the 2014 season:
Development.
BMW Motorsport engineers started to look ahead to 2014 and began working on the development of the new BMW M4 DTM well before the start of the 2013 DTM season. The first model made its first appearance in the wind tunnel at the BMW Group’s Aero Lab on 22nd April – 13 days before the opening race of the 2013 season in Hockenheim (DE). In the summer of 2013, while continuing with aerodynamic testing, the experts in Munich (DE) turned their attention to designing new suspension parts. The new components made their first on-track outing in December 2013 – but still within the BMW M3 DTM at that point. The final parts for the chassis of the BMW M4 DTM were in production by the turn of the year, allowing the BMW teams to assemble the first models of the new car in January and February. Three hundred days after the first test in the wind tunnel, the BMW M4 DTM took to the track for its track debut in Monteblanco (ES) on 11th February 2014.
The production version of the BMW M4 Coupé provided BMW Motorsport with a perfect basis for developing the DTM racing car. Hardly surprising, given the fact that the primary goal of the BMW M GmbH engineers working on the BMW M4 Coupé was to create a robust car suitable for use on the racetrack. Among those to make valuable contributions towards achieving this goal were DTM drivers Bruno Spengler (CA) and Timo Glock (DE), who took part in tuning tests at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (DE). “I am proud to have played my part in the fine-tuning,” said Spengler. “The chassis of the BMW M4 Coupé is very sporty. The feedback from the front axle is extremely direct, and the grip on the rear axle is phenomenal. This car is the ideal basis for our car in the DTM.”
Production.
The last BMW M car to roll off the assembly line at the main BMW Plant in Munich did so back in 1991. After that, production shifted to BMW Plant Regensburg (DE). Almost 23 years later, the assembly process returned to the main factory – and just a few metres away BMW Motorsport engineers were hard at work tinkering with the racing version of the new car. However, the BMW Plants in Regensburg and Dingolfing (DE) were also involved in the development of the BMW M4 DTM. Among other things, the kilometre-long test tracks at the modern production facilities were used for aerodynamic tests. Throughout the development phase, the 2014 DTM car was to be seen at what is otherwise the venue for the exhaustive quality control checks performed on all BMW M cars.
Design.
The BMW M4 Coupé and the BMW M4 DTM lie low and flat on the tarmac. Even when stationary, the design’s powerful contours underline the performance of the two brothers. Characteristic design elements, such as the modern take on the twin headlight arrangement and distinctive twin-bar kidney grille, ensure that the car clearly stands out as a BMW M vehicle. The power dome on the bonnet is equally striking. The side of the car extends the dynamic impression created by the front end. The proportions typical of the BMW M4 Coupé, such as the long bonnet, long wheel base, set-back greenhouse and a short front overhang, formed the basis for the low and aerodynamic silhouette of the BMW M4 DTM.
Aerodynamics.
Aerodynamics plays a vital role in the DTM. For this reason, the BMW Motorsport engineers devoted a lot of time to issues such as aerodynamic drag and air flow. As on the production model, the air curtains at the front of the BMW M4 DTM are designed to reduce air drag. Narrowing air ducts accelerate the airstream flowing through the front skirt, guide it systematically past the wheels, and reduce turbulence around the wheel arches. Another new feature on the BMW M4 DTM is a plate along the side channel, which lends the racing car an even more striking outline. The eye-catching contoured roofline decreases the front surface area of the BMW M4 DTM and further reduces aerodynamic drag. The flatter rear window optimises the way the airflow approaches the rear wing. The striking wing mirrors, with their twin-stalk mounts, are already a striking feature of the production model, and the mirrors on the BMW M4 DTM have also been aerodynamically optimised for the racetrack to ensure they aid efficient airflow towards the rear of the car.
Lightweight construction.
The BMW M4 Coupé itself is a prime example of intelligent, lightweight construction. The high-performance sports car weighs just 1,497 kilograms when empty – that is a whole 80 kilograms less than its predecessor. This reduction of weight has a positive effect on the driving dynamics and consumption. This has been made possible by the extensive use of lightweight materials, such as carbon fibre reinforced plastic and aluminium. The use of carbon is also widespread in motor racing. Virtually the entire body of the BMW M4 DTM is made of this ultra-light and durable material. The weight reduction and consequent lowering of the centre of gravity are key to the car’s performance on the racetrack. The basic weight of the BMW M4 DTM, with driver, is 1,110 kilograms.
Safety.
Like the BMW M4 Coupé, the racing version also meets the highest safety standards. Over 50 of the 5,000 plus parts that make up the BMW M4 DTM are standard components, which are used in all DTM cars. One of these is the carbon fibre monocoque, which sets the benchmark in terms of safety in motorsport. With an integrated tank, steel roll cage and additional crash elements, it offers the driver effective protection in case of a crash. Parts like the gearbox, clutch, dampers and rear wing are identical in all DTM cars. This also keeps a lid on development costs.
Engine.
The BMW P66 engine in the BMW M4 DTM generates approx. 480 bhp with the air restrictor specified in the technical regulations. It is made up of 800 different components, consisting of 3,900 individual parts. When designing the DTM drivetrain, BMW Motorsport took full advantage of the technological know-how within the BMW Group. The high-tech foundry connected to BMW Plant Landshut (DE) accounts for the large cast parts, such as the cylinder head and crankcase – just as it does in the production of the six-cylinder in-line engine for the BMW M4 Coupé. The cast parts are coated and given the necessary heat treatment within the appropriate departments in Munich. The BMW V8 for the DTM is both a sprinter and a marathon runner. It allows the BMW M4 DTM to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/ in about three seconds. Only ten engines are permitted for all eight BMWs over the course of the entire season. Therefore, reliability is a prerequisite to success.
The engine’s power is transferred via a sequential six-speed sport gearbox, which is operated pneumatically using shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. The gearbox is one of the standard components, which are used by all the DTM manufacturers. It has 11 final drive ratios, which allow the engineers and drivers to react to the respective circuit and engine characteristics when setting the car up.
Steering wheel.
Additional status displays and a customised layout of the controls make the steering wheel in the new BMW M4 DTM even more comfortable for the drivers to use. The individual buttons can be allocated as the driver desires. As with the racing car, the gears on the BMW M4 Coupé can also be changed using shift paddles on the steering wheel, depending upon the configuration.
Lights.
Drivers of both the BMW M4 DTM and the BMW M4 Coupé can rely on the performance of modern LED headlamps. Light emitting diodes do more than simply save energy. Thanks to the significantly shorter reaction time compared to conventional filament lamps, the driver behind is given more notice when a driver in front of him is braking. And every fraction of a second counts on the racetrack. The light generated by LEDs is also very similar to sunlight, making it particularly easy on the eye.
